What's Going on in Your Student's Life

Move In/Move Out Tips

Moving your student into and out of the residence halls can tend to be a hectic event. The last thing you want to do is rush through the day and put undue stress on yourself. Here are some tips to keep in mind that the Orientation Staff has prepared to ease the transitions into and out of your living space:

Moving In (September 20 & 21, 2008):

  • If possible, arrive early.
  • There are volunteers who can answer most questions, as well as help you with the check-in procedures.
  • If your student wants to loft their bed, bringing a ratchet and wrench is a good idea. The front desk at each residence hall has a few sets available if you do not bring them.
  • Take breaks! Rest assured there are thousands of other new students and parents going through this as well!

Moving Out (June 12, 2009):

  • Start early in the day. Moving out tends to be a long process.
  • Remind your student to have their room in its original order before you arrive to move out. (It is a good idea to have this done before finals week so they do not have to contend with this during finals!)
  • If possible, bring things home during breaks to minimize what needs to be picked up when moving out.
  • Allow time for summer good-byes, pictures, and check out inspections.

Residence Halls Association

In order to make residence hall life more enjoyable and enriching for students on campus, the Residence Halls Association (RHA) works hard throughout the year planning events for those who live in on-campus housing. With services geared towards students living in the residence halls, several RHA officers are elected at the end of each year in order to serve the needs of incoming residents during the following academic year. Several positions are available in the fall for incoming students. The RHA officers work with hall councils (a form of student government within each residence hall) to plan social and educational events and activities. Some of these activities include Sand Castles Day, All Hall Ball and All Hall Talent Show. Through their hard work, RHA members make the transition to college and life in the residence halls easy and enjoyable for residents. RHA has three offices, one in San Nicolas Hall, one in the De Anza Resource Center, and one in Santa Catalina Hall.

For more information about RHA, call the RHA office at (805) 893-4877 or visit the RHA website at rha.housing.ucsb.edu.

Parents' Weekend

Every fall, UCSB welcomes students’ families—parents, brothers, sisters, and grandparents—to explore the campus and get a firsthand look at what life is like at UCSB. Guests will have the opportunity to attend classes, and participate in faculty presentations, information sessions, campus tours and specially planned social events. Family members also have an opportunity to meet a variety of UCSB faculty and Chancellor Henry T. Yang. UCSB Parents’ and Family Weekend is October 24-26, 2008. Check in will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24. For more information, visit http://www.ia.ucsb.edu/pfw.

Finals Week

Eating Lunch By the Lagoon

Finals week is when final examinations are held. During this week, your student follows a finals schedule based on the courses in which s/he enrolled (see Schedule of Classes). In order to accommodate students who need to study, the library is open longer, and there are 24-hour quiet hours in the residence halls. During this time, students are studying constantly so don’t worry if your student does not contact you during this time. This is a great time to send a card, letter, or care package! Final exams are usually 3 hours in length, and are scheduled at standard times (8-11am, 12-3pm, 4-7pm, 7:30-10:30pm). Students are encouraged to check the Finals Schedule when enrolling in courses to avoid having more than two finals in one day. During this week, students are also making changes to their course schedule for the following quarter. Once students complete finals, they usually pack to leave for the break (fall and winter) or to move out of their current place of residence (spring).
