What to Do When Visiting Your Student...

The first thing most parents want to do when visiting their student for the first time is to explore the campus. Many families want to look around the student’s room and residence hall and eat in the dining commons. After this first visit, parents and students often enjoy the numerous attractions of the surrounding areas. The following are some favorite family activities. More information can be found in the Kiosk (the Official Student Handbook), the Santa Barbara News-Press, and the Independent news and entertainment paper.

    Santa Barbara Area:
  • Artswalk (on Sundays) along Cabrillo Blvd - Lots of cool arts and crafts
  • Parasailing from Stearn’s Wharf, Blue Edge Parasailing
  • Whale Watching
  • Santa Barbara Symphony performances
  • The Sea Center on Stearn's Wharf
  • Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
  • Santa Barbara Zoo
  • Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
  • Bike riding from campus to downtown
  • Tours of the Santa Barbara Mission
  • Goleta Lemon Festival (Oct.18-19)
    City of Santa Barbara:
  • Taking walks along any beach
  • Swimming at Red Rock
  • Taking the "Red Tile Walking Tour" in SB (ask SB Visitor's Center)
  • Walk around the cliffs or the lagoon
  • Walking/Biking along Cabrillo Blvd.
  • Going to the farmers' market to buy fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Kayaking or sailing
  • Barbecues
  • Bowling at Zodo's Bowling Alley
  • Surfing
  • Watching the migrating butterflies in Ellwood
  • Taking a dinner cruise in the SB Harbor
  • Parasailing from Stearn’s Wharf, Blue Edge Parasailing
  • See a play or ballet at the Arlington Theater
    Surrounding Areas:
  • Shopping in Solvang
  • Touring Hearst Castle in San Simeon
  • Taking a day trip to Cambria, Morro Bay, or other nearby towns
  • All Terrain Vehicle park at Oceano Dunes
  • Taking a boat trip to the Channel Islands
  • Golf 'n' Stuff in Ventura
  • Trips to Magic Mountain, Disneyland, etc.
  • Touring the wineries in Santa Ynez (have to be 21 to taste)
    Student Favorites:
  • Hiking in the local mountains; hikes to Seven Falls and Rattlesnake Canyon are very popular. (www.santabarbarahikes.com)
  • Dinner or coffee and a movie
  • Stroll/shop on State Street
  • Take a night walk along the pier downtown (Cabrillo Blvd.)
  • Attend a performance/play on campus or in the community
  • Inspiration Point hike
