ACCESS CARD: The official student ID card; used to check out books at the Library. Can be used as a debit card on campus if money is put on account, and to get food from university-owned dining commons if the student has a meal plan
AP: Advanced Placement (a good thing) or Academic Probation (a bad thing)
ARBOR: A convenience store west of the library that sells snacks, coffee, and lunch.
ARD: Assistant Resident Director
AS: Associated Students (student government)
AS NOTES: Notes taken by a paid notetaker; subscriptions available
BARC: Billing, Accounts/Receivable, Collections —UCSB’s billing office
CCS: College of Creative Studies
CHO: Community Housing Office
CLAS: Campus Learning Assistance Services
CONVOCATION: UCSB’s official welcome for new students
CRASH: To add a class by petition after the quarter begins
CSO: Community Service Organization; escort service for campus safety
D-DAYS: Discovery Days; welcome events scheduled during the first week of fall quarter
DLG: De La Guerra Dining Commons
DP: Del Playa; Oceanside street in I.V.
EAP: Education Abroad Program
EOP: Educational Opportunity Program
FONTAINEBLEU: A privately owned residence hall in Isla Vista
GAUCHO: Argentinean cowboy; UCSB’s mascot
GE: General Education requirements
GOLD: Gaucho On-Line Data, a way for students to access information such as grades and classes
IC: Instructional Computing
IV: The community of Isla Vista (next to UCSB)
KIOSK: Official Student Handbook; a structure covered with posters, flyers, etc.
L&S: College of Letters and Science
LA CUMBRE: UCSB yearbook
MCC: MultiCultural Center
NETSTATION: Computers located around campus on which students can access their records, send e-mail, etc.
NEXUS: Student newspaper
PASS TIME: A registration appointment on GOLD that allows students to register for classes
RA: Resident Assistant in the residence halls
RD: Resident Director; oversees an entire Residence Hall
RecCen: Recreation Center, financed by student fees; Students can use the RecCen for free with their current Access card
RHA: Residence Halls Association
SCHEDULE OF CLASSES: List of classes offered each quarter; contains important deadline information; published each quarter
SRB: Student Resource Building
STATE STREET: the main strip of Downtown Santa Barbara
SYLLABUS: Typed summary of course requirements and assignments handed out in class
TA: Teaching Assistant; usually a graduate student
TROP: Tropicana Gardens, a privately owned residence hall in Isla Vista
UCEN: University Center where the bookstore, post office, and other eateries are located
UC REGENTS: The University of California’s governing board; to whom checks are written for fees
URC: University Religious Center
