One Student's Perspective:

"I love the fact that you can walk anywhere, anytime, day or night, and there will always be other people around. You’re never alone in IV or on campus, and I like that."

—Senior, History

Myth:

All there is to do in Isla Vista is party on the weekend.

Fact:

While going to a party is an option for a weekend night activity, it is by far not the only option. UCSB and the Santa Barbara area are lively and diverse places with plenty of opportunities for fun that do not involve drinking. There are always lectures or performances put on by UCSB's Arts & Lectures program. Additionally, the Magic Lantern Film Series in Isla Vista Theater, a well-attended new addition to the Isla Vista community, offers inexpensive and safe entertainment on the weekends. Sporting events are also another great option for students. Gaucho Locos is UCSB's popular spirit group to get involved with if you want to support school athletics. Downtown Santa Barbara is a great place to hang out with live music and delicious restaurants. There are always many things for students to do in the area throughout the week and weekend and students should feel comfortable seeking them out. The After Dark (www.sa.ucsb.edu/osl/afterdarkcalendar) and Wellness (http://wellness.sa.ucsb.edu) calendars are great places to find upcoming events at UCSB and in the surrounding area.
